How IVF Works

To understand Precision IVF, we first need to learn how IVF works in general.

IVF Process Overview:
The Big Picture

What we call IVF can generally be broken down into these four major components

Introduction to Precision IVF®

To counter the flaws he saw in traditional IVF methods, Dr. Yelian began developing the foundations of Precision IVF at Life IVF Center in 2012. After decades of conventional IVF experience and research into the most advanced stimulation protocols, Dr. Yelian launched Precision IVF out of his belief in prioritizing the results and well-being of patients over the convenience of physicians.

The result is a revolutionary approach to fertility treatment, designing a custom protocol specifically tailored to each patient’s body using the optimal level of medication to help achieve their fertility goals.

How Precision IVF differs from Conventional IVF

Fertility treatment can’t be one-size-fits-all, but unfortunately that’s not usually the case at most IVF programs. Treating a 30-year-old PCOS patient should be different from a 40-year-old with endometriosis, but most IVF centers use nearly identical treatment plan “templates” for patients of all ages and challenges.

This means daily hormone injections to force the body to produce many eggs. While this can be effective for some, the process has many downsides: it creates heavy stress on the patient’s body, has staggering medication costs, an ethically questionable number of unused embryos, and often dangerous side effects.

How Precision IVF works

With Precision IVF, we take a patient-centric approach that starts with a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history, current condition, lifestyle factors, and desired outcomes to design a treatment tailored for you rather than the average of all patients.

This allows us to assess the best course of action for your situation while also informing decisions related to medications, procedure types, monitoring protocols, transfer timing and embryo selection.

Precision IVF® emphasizes matching the right medication to the right underlying condition, the right dosage to the right ovarian function level, and ultimately the right treatment protocol for each patient. By properly doing so, it is safe, simple, and a highly cost-effective IVF option for all infertility patients.

The world’s first Precision IVF case was completed for a 38-year-old patient with endometriosis. She wished to do IVF but without using any fertility drugs. Dr. Yelian performed a fully natural cycle egg retrieval using no hormones whatsoever. He retrieved one egg, used a single sperm for ICSI, and made one blastocyst. PGT-A testing determined the blastocyst was health and normal. Transferring this embryo then resulted in the live birth of a healthy baby girl. Since then, Dr. Yelian and the Life IVF Center team have helped thousands of patients build the families of their dreams with Precision IVF.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Precision IVF®?
Precision IVF® is our individualized approach to in vitro fertilization, developed at Life IVF Center beginning in 2012. Rather than applying a single standard protocol to every patient, we design each cycle around the specific person in front of us, taking into account age, ovarian function, cause of infertility, uterine condition, lifestyle, and fertility goals.
How is Precision IVF® different from conventional IVF?
Conventional IVF typically follows a high-dose, one-size-fits-all stimulation protocol. Precision IVF starts with the patient instead of the protocol. We use the lowest effective level of medication needed to reach your specific goals, which can mean fewer side effects, lower medication costs, and a cycle designed around your body rather than around clinic convenience.
Is Minimal Stimulation IVF the same as Precision IVF®?
No. Minimal stimulation may be one component of a Precision IVF cycle for the right patient, but Precision IVF is broader. It encompasses a full spectrum of approaches, including Natural, Minimal, and Optimal stimulation protocols, and we fine-tune them throughout treatment. A given Precision IVF cycle may not fit neatly into any single conventional label.
Is Precision IVF® a good fit if I am a younger patient?
Yes. Younger patients often respond strongly to stimulation, which means conventional high-dose protocols can produce more eggs and embryos than are actually needed, along with more medication burden, cost, and side effects. Precision IVF aims for the right number of high-quality embryos to meet your goals efficiently, without overshooting.
Will my Precision IVF® cycle look like another patient's?
Probably not, and that is by design. Every patient's body, history, and goals are different, so two Precision IVF cycles can look very different even when patients are similar on paper. Comparing your protocol, dosing, or timeline to someone else's, including stories you see online, rarely tells you anything meaningful about your own care.
Can my protocol change during treatment?
Yes. Precision IVF is responsive, not rigid. As we monitor how your body is responding, we adjust medication dose, timing, and approach in real time. The goal is the right cycle for the way your body is actually behaving on a given day, not a plan locked in at the start.
Why do you focus on using less medication when possible?
More medication is not the same as better results. Higher doses can mean more cost, more side effects, more embryos than a patient actually needs, and in some cases can even reduce egg quality, without necessarily improving outcomes. Where appropriate, we use the lowest effective level of stimulation to reach your fertility goals, which often makes treatment more comfortable and more sustainable across multiple cycles if needed.
Who is a good candidate for Precision IVF®?
The strength of Precision IVF is that it is not a single protocol, so it adapts to the needs of very different patient cases rather than asking patients to fit a fixed approach. That makes it a fit for a wide range of people, including those with diminished ovarian reserve, patients who have had unsuccessful conventional IVF cycles, older patients, younger patients who want to minimize medication exposure, and anyone who wants a treatment plan built specifically around their body and goals.
