IN VITRO FERTILIZATION

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a technique in which fertilization is accomplished outside of the body, and the resulting embryo is transferred back into a woman's uterus. In order to achieve the pregnancy, several options are available to patients. Life IVF Center specializes in Natural Cycle IVF (NC-IVF) and Minimal Stimulation IVF (MS-IVF) treatments. However, in some patients, we will utilize conventional IVF. In general, pregnancy may first be attempted using natural conception, and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), before beginning a more intensive IVF opton. Conventional IVF: Depends on various protocols, patients need to use birth control pill for 2-3 weeks prior to starting fertility medication. One week prior to starting period, patients will use daily Lupron injection to suppress natural FSH release. After period starts, patients will start fertility drugs (such as Follistim, Gonal F, Menopur, etc) 150-450 IU daily injection. After 4-6 days, patients need a daily ultrasound and blood tests to monitor follicular development. When 3-4 leading follicles reach 18-20 mm (typical 8-10 days injections), a hCG injection is given to trigger final oocyte maturation. Egg retrieval procedure will be done 36 hours later. Usually 20-30 eggs will be collected, and the eggs will be fertilized by partners sperm using insemination or ICSI. Two to three embryos will be transfer back to the uterus by ultrasound guidance.
